Flying Carpet Theatre is excited to continue our artistic commitment to creating original plays dealing with important contemporary themes while celebrating popular performance genres.
After the run-away success of Alpin Hong: Chasing Chopin, Flying Carpet’s “Virtu-STORY-osity” program continues creating one-person solo shows that uniquely blend true life stories with a performer’s virtuosic theatrical skill. This season, new “Virtu-STORY-osity” shows in development include workshop performances of Andrew Nemr’s blend of his immigrant story and American Rhythm Tap dance called Rising to the Tap. This year, Andrew performed excerpts or workshop versions of the show in 2017 at Future of Storytelling Summit NYC, Conversations Dance Party Manhattan, McBurney YMCA Kick Off Manhattan, CUNY Queens, CUNY Tribeca, and Reedemer City to City Hub Weekend.
Flying Carpet has also been hard at work on development workshops of Shontina Vernon’s journey through juvenile detention as a young person to reinventing her life, coupled with her performance of live R&B music entitled Forging Ahead. This show was recently granted a prestigious MAP Fund award. Shontina shares her roller-coaster life story (upbringing in rural TX, incarceration, success as writer, performer and as activist) alongside her R&B performance. In 2016/17, Flying Carpet had open rehearsals and educational workshops engaging patrons and stakeholders at ART NY, and students at Marble Hill School for International Studies.
So far, Rising to the Tap and Forging Ahead workshop performances have reached a total of nearly 1,000 New Yorkers! Both students and patrons have offered invaluable feedback in the development process. We will feature fully produced versions of these shows in our 2018/19 season!
